Become a Freediving Professional!

The PFI Assistant Freediver Instructor certification is for individuals who want to learn the fundamentals of teaching through the use of educational tools, systems, and educational philosophies. You will also learn how to assist and supervise breath-hold divers during PFI courses, freedive training, and recreational freediving.

In this course you will:

  • Learn techniques to present and manage student learning in classroom, confined water, and open water environments

  • Understand the Open Water Rig components and how to assemble them

  • Be equipped with professional level safety and problem management skills for assisting student emergencies

  • Conduct your own AFI Candidate presentations and microteaching to PFI educational standards

  • Learn how to develop lesson plans for classroom, confined water, and open water sessions


  • You are certified PFI Intermediate Freediver, Supervisor, or equivalent from a recognized agency with PFI Freediver Crossover Exam, plus PFI Freediver Supervisor.

  • You have current CPR, AED, O2 Administration, and First Aid certifications

  • You're interested in learning and sharing valuable freediving techniques with others

  • You're interested in participating in PFI or affiliate freediving courses

  • You're in good health and fitness—check the PFI Medical Form

Download and review the PFI medical form. To become an active PFI Professional, the PFI Medical Form must be signed by a physician even if you answer "No" to all questions.

The PFI Assistant Freediver Instructor course is held over four days and includes:

  • 16 Hours of Classroom Sessions

  • 8 Hours of Confined Water Sessions

  • 5 Hours of Open Water Sessions

The schedule and layout/order of these sessions vary slightly by location. The program is typically run over 4 days. Click the link on any particular course to find the exact schedule for that program.


  • Minimum age of 18 years

  • PFI Intermediate Freediver, Supervisor, or higher certification

  • Up to date (within 2 years) CPR, First Aid, O2 Administration, and AED certifications—documentation required

  • Be in good medical and physical condition and with above average swimming skills


Upon successful completion of PFI Assistant Freediver Instructor, graduates may engage in co-teaching freediving activities under the direct supervision of a PFI Instructor.

Graduates may also be qualified to enroll in the Instructor Evaluation program for qualification as a Freediver Instructor or higher (experience dependent).

To receive PFI Assistant Freediver Instructor certification, one must:

  • Pass all academic knowledge quizzes and exams

  • Demonstrate mastery and understanding of Assistant Instructor level supervision skills

  • Demonstrate mastery in Confined Water & Open Water skills

    • Perform untimed swim

    • Perform timed mask-fins-snorkel swim

    • Rescue with egress

    • Tread for a specific time

    • Perform to PFI standard throughout all freediving and swimming capacity tests and performances

  • Demonstrate Instructor level rescue and egress skills

  • Demonstrate safe and responsible diving practices

  • Present academic presentations and receive a passing score

  • Present Confined Water & Open Water teaching presentations and receive a passing score


For this course, each diver is responsible for bringing his or her own equipment:

  • Low volume mask

  • Snorkel

  • Full wetsuit (3mm for warm water locations; 5-7mm for cold water locations)

  • Rubber weight belt and small number weights

  • Freediving bi-fins

  • Freediving computer plus an additional waterproof timing device

  • PFI Issued Course Manual


The PFI Assistant Freediver Instructor course starts at $750.

Performance Freediving International Professional Membership and Witherspoon & Associates or First Dive Professional liability insurance are an extra charge for those interested in teaching freediving professionally after receiving Assistant Instructor certification.
