Crossover and Become an Instructor with the industry leaders!

PFI has two ways to crossover and become a PFI Instructor. Which one is for you?

Crossover option 1: Already a Freediving Instructor with another agency

  1. Take an Intermediate Equivalency Test (1-Day with Classroom, pool and open water testing to the PFI Intermediate Level) *If you already have a PFI Intermediate certification you wont need this step)

  2. Safety Freediver Course (2-Days)

  3. Freediver Supervisor Course (2-Days)

  4. Freediver Instructor Exam (2-Days)

What is included:

This package includes 7-days of instruction and all course manuals and shirts (as stated on the PFI website).  You will need to provide all of your own gear (see website for details), as well as any necessary travel and accommodations.  Insurance and Professional Membership are needed in order to be an active Instructor.

Crossover option 2: You are a SCUBA Instructor

  1. Intermediate Freediver Course (4-days)

  2. Safety Freediver Course (2-Days)

  3. Freediver Supervisor Course (2-Days)

  4. Freediver Instructor Exam (2-Days)

What is included:

This package includes 10-days of instruction and all course manuals and shirts (as stated on the PFI website).  You will need to provide all of your own gear (see website for details), as well as any necessary travel and accommodations.  Insurance and Professional Membership are needed in order to be an active Instructor.

IS THIS COURSE FOR YOU?

  • You are certified and current as a SCUBA Instructor

  • You are fit and in good health—check the PFI Medical Form

If you answer yes to the above, then this is the course for you!

Download and review the PFI medical form. To become an active PFI Professional, the PFI Medical Form must be signed by a physician even if you answer "No" to all questions.

For this course, please have current DAN (Divers Alert Network) Dive Accident Insurance. If you don't already have it, you can sign up for it on their website at: www.diversalertnetwork.org.


PREREQUISITEs for both options

  • Minimum age of 21 years

  • Current Freediver or SCUBA Instructor (proof of certification will be requested)

  • Be in good medical and physical condition and with above average swimming skills. You will need to have the PFI Medical Form signed by a doctor within 1-year of your completion date.

Qualification of Graduates

Upon successful completion of PFI Freediver Instructor, graduates may participate as a lead Instructor in PFI or self-organized PFI freediving courses. Instructors can teach the following PFI programs: Safe Buddy, Snorkeler, Freediver, and related coaching and open line sessions. You can also earn specialty Instructor ratings such as Ocean Hunter.

To receive PFI Freediver Instructor certification, one must:

  • Pass all academic knowledge quizzes and exams

  • Demonstrate mastery and understanding of Basic Instructor level supervision skills

  • Demonstrate mastery in confined water and open water skills

  • Demonstrate Instructor level rescue and egress skills

  • Demonstrate safe and responsible diving practices

  • Present an academic presentation and receive a passing score

  • Present a confined water and an open water teaching presentation and receive passing scores

    • Perform untimed swim

    • Perform timed mask-fins-snorkel swim

    • Rescue with egress

    • Tread for a specific time

    • Perform to PFI standard through all freediving and swimming capacity tests and performances

 What to Bring

For this course, each diver is responsible for bringing his or her own equipment:

  • Low volume mask

  • Snorkel

  • Full wetsuit (3mm for warm water locations; 5-7mm for cold water locations)

  • Rubber weight belt and small number weights

  • Freediving bi-fins

  • Freediving computer plus an additional waterproof timing device

  • PFI Issued Course Manuals

  • Underwater slate and pencil

COST

The Instructor course starts at $1535 (with option 1) or $2085 (with option 2). All manuals are included in the course fee. Boat fees may be extra (location dependent).

Performance Freediving International annual Professional Membership and Witherspoon & Associates, First Dive or DAN Professional liability insurance are an extra charge for those interested in teaching freediving professionally after receiving Assistant Instructor certification.

REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT DETAILS

To secure your spot in a course, we need to receive your registration and either a 50% deposit or full payment. Any outstanding course balance is due by the start of the course. See our course schedule to register. 

(Note: Instructors may or may not use our course registration and database but all use the PFI educational system.)

By registering for a course you will also receive:

  2. Access to online portal including training tips, email access, and private PFI diving community

  3. Communication with staff/instructor to answer any questions ahead of time

  4. Access to e-learning/pre-learning online course
