5th AIDA Team World Championships - Hurghada, Egypt Dec 1-12, 2006

Dec 6th was to be the first day of this international competition. First up was constant Ballast. 10am was the time set for the first athletes to board the zodiac boats that would take them to the competition site. Well at 9:35am the organizer came ashore and announced that the competitions official start would be pushed back by 2 hours as things were not quite ready. So many athletes who were in their suits and ready to go walked back to their rooms to rest for a couple more hours.

At 12 noon the athletes once again returned to the beach ready to head out to the site and do their dives. The first few boats left with tension filled athletes. The first official top was to be at 1pm. At 1:06pm we saw some zodiacs returning to the beach filled with people in wetsuits. First thought was that the first athletes were done and coming back. Turns out that due to a broken bottom plate and cameras that weren't working the competition had been cancelled for the day.

So with the organizers and volunteers still out at the site trying to get things ready, the athletes wait at the hotel and get ready for the competition to begin tomorrow Dec 7th. Now the constant weight competition will run Dec 7-9, 2006.

Dec 9th Update: The first two days of actual competition went very smoothly. On the first days results you will notice that there are two competitors that protested their DQ BO (Black out disqualification). In both cases they were either hung up on the tag or caught on the extra tags at the bottom plate. Both won their protests and will be redoing their dives today.

Tomorrow, Dec 10 is the static apnea part of the competition followed by dynamic apnea on Dec 11. Stay tuned!

Freediving or breath-hold diving is a type of advanced snorkeling and water adventure that allows us to experience the sights, sounds and challenges of the most natural of underwater experiences.

Human evolution and development has ingrained us with an underwater potential the same as our marine cousins, whales, seals and dolphins.

Without the use of underwater breathing apparatus, freedivers on a single breath of air can explore the underwater realm for minutes at a time with relative comfort.

Freediving is about the comfort and exploration of the ocean realm for recreation, spearfishing, competition or personal discovery.

For over 7 years, Performance Freediving has helped enthusiastic men, women and youth to explore the underwater world with expert training, support and products from the world's top freedivers.

PFI is North America's longest running Freediving training agency having taught over 2300 students to dive deeper, longer, and safer. Let us show you how!
