RESEARCH PROGRAM- FREEDIVING STUDY/CLINIC

» Locations » Basic  » Intermediate    » Advanced    » SFU Program    » Upcoming    » Past

Canadian freedivers have achieved many great accomplishments in the world of competitive freediving. Two Canadian freedivers set world records in this sport while our Team Canada Women's members have placed in the top three over the past three years and recently won the AIDA World Team Freediving Championships for a second time. This is just the beginning for Team Canada and each year the Advanced Freediver Research Program molds the potential new members of this highly successful men's and women's team and this past years Team Canada members were comprised of nine out ten having attended this program.

Overview:

Starting March 13th, for its seventh year in a row, Simon Fraser University in partnership with the members of Performance Freediving and the Canadian Association of Apnea (CAFA) will be running an Advanced Freediver Research Study. This program studies non or novice freedivers over a 12-week period measuring their psychophysiological adaptation. This is done in order to aid science in understanding some of the attributes freedivers are able to develop in respects to mammalian diving reflexes and how these psychophysiological adaptations can help the larger public.

This clinic will be conducted by Kirk Krack, Founder and Past President of the Canadian Association of Freediving and Apnea (CAFA) and Coach/Captain of Team Canada; Mandy-Rae Cruickshank, seven time world record holder, eleven time national record holder and Team Canada member and CAFA Board member Tom Lightfoot (Team Canada member and Canadian national record holder). Dr. Andrew Blaber of the Simon Fraser University School of Kinesiology in Vancouver, Canada, will be conducting a study of participants involving the Psychophysiological Adaptations and Responses of Novice and Elite Freedivers. The non-invasive research testing may study the following:

  • Pulmonary Function Measurements
  • Cardiovascular Measurements
  • Blood Pressure Monitoring
  • Maximal Oxygen Uptake Measurement

The research clinic will run one Thursday evening a week for twelve weeks, starting on March 1st, 2007, and cover both class and pool sessions with weeks seven to twelve including a weekend open water dive component. This clinic is designed to enhance the participants physiological and psychological capabilities along with the techniques required to be a competent and safe freediver. Non-invasive testing will be done on weeks 1 and 12. Advanced Freediver program covers the following:

  • Safety and Problem Management
  • Equalization and Equipment for Freediving
  • Physics and Physiology of Freediving
  • Breathing and Relaxation for Freediving
  • Surface Swimming Techniques
  • Breathing and Surface Diving Techniques
  • Underwater Swimming
  • Constant Ballast and Free Immersion
  • Static and Dynamic Apnea

Freediving or breath-hold diving is a type of advanced snorkeling and water adventure that allows us to experience the sights, sounds and challenges of the most natural of underwater experiences.

Human evolution and development has ingrained us with an underwater potential the same as our marine cousins, whales, seals and dolphins.

Without the use of underwater breathing apparatus, freedivers on a single breath of air can explore the underwater realm for minutes at a time with relative comfort.

Freediving is about the comfort and exploration of the ocean realm for recreation, spearfishing, competition or personal discovery.

For over 7 years, Performance Freediving has helped enthusiastic men, women and youth to explore the underwater world with expert training, support and products from the world's top freedivers.

PFI is North America's longest running Freediving training agency having taught over 2300 students to dive deeper, longer, and safer. Let us show you how!
